John Cavanaugh, PT, MEd, ATC, has been a pillar of sports medicine at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, serving as an athletic trainer since 1980 and team physical therapist since 1984. For more than four decades, he has safeguarded generations of midshipmen through expert care, collaboration with team physicians, and unwavering game-day support. Beyond Kings Point, John is a clinician-educator with the Hospital for Special Surgery and a director within its Sports PT Residency. In 2024, he earned the APTA’s Lynn C. Wallace Clinical Education and Professional Development Award, recognizing his national impact as a mentor and leader. John has also represented the United States, serving as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games. Additionally, he has advanced the sport of lacrosse in Ireland, holding leadership roles since 2002. John’s career and passion for his profession epitomizes service, excellence, and competitive readiness.
