Men’s Swim & Dive Defeats DII Southern Connecticut State Behind Three NCAA Cuts

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Jan. 9, 2026) – On Friday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team defeated Division II Southern Connecticut State, 195-105, to remain undefeated at 8-0 on the season. Two Mariners achieved three NCAA Cuts in diving events throughout the evening, senior Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) who is now officially going to Regionals and freshman Carter Kov (Goodyear, Ariz.), while senior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) led all swimmers with three individual victories.
 
Meet Link Cable hit cuts in both the one-meter and the three-meter, as he came in second in the 1M with a score of 300.75 and won the 3M with a 286.20 to officially punch his ticket to the NCAA Regional Championships with his second cut in the events this season. Kov won the 1M with a score of 332.33.
 
Mayer won the 100 backstroke (54.66), the 200 back (2:00.00) and the 200 individual medley (2:00.04).
 
Three other Mariners had two wins apiece:
  • Junior Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.) touched first in the 100 breaststroke (59.18) and the 200 breast (2:13.01)
  • Sophomore Max Fedorenko (Chicago, Ill.) won the 50 freestyle (21.62) and the 100 free (46.61)
  • And freshman Keanne Hernandez (Deer Park, N.Y.) was victorious in the 200 butterfly (1:58.79) and the 100 fly (52.34) 
The 400 medley relay team of Mayer, sophomore John Frank (Highland, Md.), Hernandez and Fedorenko started the meet off with a victory in 3:30.30.
 
Three season-best times were achieved on the night, as well, by junior Luke Frank (Highland, Md.) in the 1000 free by 10 seconds (10:59.41), John Frank in the 50 free (22.25) and junior Caden Latchaw (Queenstown, Md.) in the 100 free (49.99).
 
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Hernandez.
 
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they play host to arch-rival Coast Guard beginning at 1 p.m. at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
