WEST POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy sent a group of freshmen and sophomores up to compete in the West Point Open on Saturday. The Mariners had three top-10 finishes and four personal bests set at the event.

Sophomore thrower
Jordan Washington (Tampa, Fla.) came in ninth place in the shot put with a toss of 8.20m (26' 11"), while classmate
Katelin Hanifan (Andover, N.J.) was right behind in 10th place with a mark of 7.91m (25' 11.5").

Freshman
Kathryn Wahab (Waxhaw, N.C.) also placed 10th in the 400m with a time of 1:19.30.

Wahab had two of the Mariners' four PRs on the day, in the 60m (9.82) and the 400m (1:19.30). The other two were by freshman
Jasmine Predum (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 200m (33.87) and Washington in the weight throw (11.94m – 39' 2.25").

Up next, the Mariners will compete in the Ramapo Opener next Friday, Jan. 17. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. at the Armory in Manhattan.
