2/8/2025 8:04:00 PM

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team battled a pair of Centennial Conference opponents at a round of league dual meets hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday. Kings Point came from behind in its first match of the day to defeat McDaniel College, 27-18, but dropped a 32-18 decision against Ursinus in the second contest. The Blue and Grey have a 9-5 dual-meet record on the season and end Centennial action at 3-2.

Meet Link Three Mariner wrestlers won multiple bouts on the day, with senior Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.), junior Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) and sophomore Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) all posting 2-0 records. Seniors Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.), Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) and Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) and freshman Maxwell Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) also picked up a win each.

In the opener, McDaniel took an early 6-0 lead courtesy of a forfeit at 125 pounds before Wydick recorded a pin in 2:02 at 133 and Lausten earned an 11-5 decision at 141 to help the Mariners grab a 9-6 lead.

The Green Terror took three straight matches to take a 19-6 advantage with a fall at 149, a decision at 157 and a major decision at 165.

USMMA closed out the match with authority with four straight victories, as Corral sparked the comeback with a 14-8 decision, followed by Withers registering a quick pin in 34 seconds in the 184-pound bout to cut the deficit to one point, 19-18. Cowley's 2-1 decision over at 197 put USMMA in front for good 21-19, and then Garrison closed it out with a fall in 2:57 at 285 to give them a 27-18 victory.

In the second match against the hosts, the Bears grabbed an early six-point margin with the forfeit win at 125 points before Wydick registered a 10-9 decision at 133 to cut the lead to 6-3. Ursinus took the next two matches at 141 and 149 to stretch their advantage to 16-3.

Pinc recorded a first-period pin to get the deficit down to seven, 16-9. After the Bears picked up back-to-back falls to take a 28-9 lead, Withers and Cowley grabbed their second victories of the day with a 4-0 decision at 184 and fall in 1:43 at 197, respectively, but it was too-little-too-late, as Ursinus had already clinched the team win.

The Blue and Grey return to competition this Wednesday, Feb. 12, against rival Coast Guard at 7 p.m. at Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, N.Y. Prior to the match they will pay tribute to their nine graduating seniors with a special Senior Night ceremony.
