Wrestling Wins Two Of Three Matches At Muhlenberg Centennial Duals

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Feb. 1, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy faced off with three Centennial Conference opponents on Saturday at the dual meets hosted by Muhlenberg College. Kings Point dropped their first match on the afternoon to Johns Hopkins 31-12 before ending the day with back-to-back victories over Gettysburg College (31-17) and host Muhlenberg College (26-15). USMMA holds an 8-4 dual-meet record on the season.
 
Meet Link Four Mariner wrestlers won multiple bouts on the day, with sophomore Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) posting a 3-0 record in the 184-weight class to lead the Blue and Grey with two victories coming by way of fall over John's Hopkin's Sam Gledhill (in 1:54) and a pin over Gettysburg's Carson Pascoe (in 1:08) while the third came by a 15-4 major decision over Muhlenberg's Ryan Fairchild. Junior Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) and freshman Maxwell Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) were also undefeated at the Dual, going 2-0 at the 133 and 165, while sophomore Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) took two of his three matches in the 149-weight class.
 
Seven other wrestlers picked up victories for USMMA at the meet. Seniors Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.) and Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) won by pins in the Mariner's second match against Gettysburg at 197 and 285.
           
The Blue Jays went up by an early six-point margin thanks to a forfeit win at 125 pounds and a fall at 133. Merchant Marine evened the match at six, with senior Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) recording an 8-6 decision at 141 pounds and Trinidad posting a 7-6 decision at 149. USMMA's final six points would come at 184, with Withers recording a fall.
 
In the Mariners' match with Gettysburg, the Bullets grabbed the first six points courtesy of a forfeit at the 125 before Wydick helped even it up at six apiece, recording a fall over Kyle Collins in the 133-weight class. The Bullets took the three straight matches to take a 17-6 advantage by 4-1 and 7-3 decisions at 141 and 157 and a technical fall at 149. Kings Point closed out the contest with five straight victories as Corral won via a 7-4 decision in sudden victory at 165, senior Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) grabbed an 11-2 major decision at 174 while Withers, Cowley, and Garrison grabbed three pins each to help the Mariners complete the come from behind victory 31-17.
 
The Mules grabbed a 6-0 advantage via a forfeit at the 125, then Wydick cut the lead down to 6-3, winning via a 13-10 decision in sudden victory at 133. Muhlenberg increased their lead back to six, 9-3, with a 5-1 decision, then Kings Point took three consecutive matches to build their lead to 16-9. Trinidad grabbed a 9-1 major decision over Alex Greco at 149, then freshman Logan Weaver (Suwanee, Ga.) registered a 12-10 decision over Trey Miletics and Corral pinned Logan Hurwitt (in 6:09). The Mules responded with a pin at 174 to cut the lead to 16-15 before the Mariners closed the door on the match with three consecutive victories to win it 26-15. After Withers picked up a major decision at 184, senior Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) took a 9-3 decision over Paul Parise in the 197-weight class, and classmate Zachery Fultz (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up an 8-5 decision over Andrew Franklin in the 285-pound bout
 
The Blue and Grey return to competition in another round of Centennial Duals on Saturday, Feb. 8, hosted by Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. The Mariners will battle McDaniel College and the host Bears.
