NEW YORK (Jan. 18, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team competed at the New York/Pennsylvania Duals on Saturday night, hosted by New York University. The Mariners won one of their three matches throughout the evening, posting a 48-6 victory over Keystone to end the day. They dropped their first two competitions to Penn Tech (39-12) and Wilkes (29-24). USMMA holds a 6-3 dual-meet record on the season.

Sophomore
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) won both of his bouts on the day in the 184-point weight class to lead the Mariners, with both coming by way of quick pins over Penn Tech's Cole Shupp (in 52 seconds) and Wilkes' Patrick Gordon III (in 2:16).
11 other wrestlers picked up victories for USMMA at the meet. Senior
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) won by pin at 165 in the opening match against Penn Tech, and freshmen
Kieran Bruen (Farmingdale, N.J.) and
Matthew Gauthier (Forked River, N.J.) dropped their opponents with pins at 149 and 165, respectively, against Wilkes.
In the victory over the Giants of Keystone College, sophomore
Colin Dragon (Richmond Hill, Ga.) got the scoring started with a forfeit win at 133. That was followed by senior
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) earning a first-period pin at the 141-pound weight class.
Sophomore
Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) then won via a forfeit at 149 to give the Mariners a 18-0 lead before classmate
Matthew Ferrucci (Killingworth, Conn.) produced a late first-period fall at 157 and Merchant Marine went up 24-0.
After back-to-back forfeit victories by senior
Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore
Caleb Borchers (Vacaville, Calif.) at 165 and 174, seniors
Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) and
Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.) closed out the Mariners' scoring with a pair of first-period pins at 184 and 197, respectively.
Kings Point return to competition at a round of Centennial Duals on Saturday, Feb. 1, hosted by Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. The Mariners will start the day off against Johns Hopkins at noon before facing Gettysburg at 1:30 p.m. and then the host Mules at 3 p.m.
