KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 11, 2024) – A pair of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestlers were recently named 2023-24 Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Junior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) and freshman Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) were two of 418 wrestlers from 100 institutions who have achieved the prestigious distinction.
 
NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer praised the student-athletes, stating, "Through their unwavering dedication, these athletes and teams showcase a commitment that extends beyond the mat and into the classroom. Congratulations to each of this year's recipients."
 
Athletes who meet both the wrestling and academic criteria listed below are named Scholar All-Americans.
 
WRESTLING - Must accomplish at least 1 of the 2:

• Place in top-eight in the regional tournament
• Wrestle at least 15 matches and have a win percentage greater than 66%.
  • Matches with teammates will count only if they happened in a tournament
  • Matches set up between teammates will not count 

ACADEMICS - Must accomplish at least 1 of the 2:

• Must have an average GPA of 3.2 over the last 2 semesters or quarters or last 3 trimesters
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 

Garrison, the Mariners' starting heavyweight, finished his junior campaign with his second-straight Individual Centennial Conference Championship and represented USMMA at the NCAA National Championships. He compiled a record of 33-6 with 13 pins, four technical falls and two major decisions, and finished third in his bracket at the Mideast Regional Championships. In the classroom, he is a Marine Engineering & Shipyard Management major.
 
Mathias, who is also a Marine Engineering & Shipyard Management major, came in fifth place in the 197-pound bracket at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship to earn All-Region honors. He went 17-8 on the season with 11 falls and one major decision.
