Scherrer & Mayer Named CSCAA First Team Scholar All-Americans; Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Earn Scholar All-America Team Distinction

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 11, 2024) – Earlier this month, recent U.S. Merchant Marine Academy graduate Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) and rising junior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) of the men's swimming & diving team were named Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for the Spring 2024. Additionally, both the USMMA men's and women's swimming & diving teams were selected to as Scholar All-America Teams.
 
Samantha Barany, Executive Director of the CSCAA, praised the outstanding achievements, stating, "The commitment to academic excellence shown by these teams and student-athletes is truly admirable. It's inspiring to see student-athletes excelling both in the pool and in their studies. The CSCAA takes great pride in acknowledging and celebrating the dedication and perseverance of these teams and student-athletes."
 
To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Both Scherrer and Mayer, who shared Co-Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Year honors, represented Kings Point at the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet back in March.
 
Scherrer graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering Systems, while Mayer is pursuing a degree in Maritime Logistics and Security.

In order for the men's and women's teams to qualify for the prestigious Scholar All-America Team recognitions, they had to earn a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 during the term. The Mariner women boasted a 3.16 term GPA among its 18 team members, while the 37-member men's team had a 3.09 term GPA.
