Wrestling Falls On The Road To Rhode Island College

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team lost its road dual meet to Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon, 23-21. The defeat drops the Mariners dual record to 3-1, while the Anchormen improve to 3-3 with the victory.

Junior Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) and senior Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) earned 9-4 and 3-2 decisions at 133 and 141, then freshman Kieran Bruen (Farmingdale, N.J.) won his battle at 149 against Rhode Island's Eli Silverman via a 10-1 major decision. Senior Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) picked up a victory at 157 via a tech fall, then classmate Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) secured a 9-5 decision at 165.
 
The Anchormen stormed back, winning three straight matches as Christopher McCarthy defeated freshman Porter Gresko (Sparks, Nev.), securing a pin at 174 to cut the lead to 18-12 before Aidan Faria won over senior Eric DeWald (Marshall, Va.) with a first period technical fall in the 184 via a technical fall in the first period to make it a one-point contest, 18-17.
 
After Rhode Island grabbed the lead for good with a forfeit at 197, senior Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) earned a 7-1 decision in the heavyweight battle at 285 against Michael Alfonso.
 
Kings Point returns to competition in the New Year at the Mariner Duals on Saturday, Jan. 11, against Plymouth State and Norwich University at the academy inside the Liebertz Gymnasium.
