ONEONTA, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2024) – The USMMA wrestling team took part in the New York State Championships on Saturday hosted at the Dewar Arena on the campus of SUNY Oneonta. The Mariners placed fifth out of the 20 teams that competed with a total team score of 161.5. The host Red Dragons one the event with a score of 265, while Brockport came in second (224), Ithaca was third (214) and Oswego State placed 193.

A total of nine Mariners reached the podiums to earn All-State accolades, including freshman
Kieran Bruen (Farmingdale, N.J.) and senior
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) who won both came in first place in the 149 freshman/senior bracket and the 285 open bracket, respectively.

Bruen posted a perfect 5-0 record with three falls and two major decisions to earn a team-best 24 team points for Merchant Marine.

Garrison scored 17.5 team points after going 3-0 with a tech. fall in the finals and a pin in his first match of the day.

Freshman
Maxwell Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) came in second place in the 174 open bracket after going 2-1, while classmate
Colby Cloutier (Wrentham, Mass.) placed second in the 165 freshman/sophomore bracket with a record of 3-1 with two pins.

A trio of Mariners garnered third-place showings, as junior
Trevor Badiu (Litchfield, Ohio) went 3-2 with a pin and a tech. fall at 174 in the open bracket, sophomore
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) was 3-1 with two pins and a tech. fall in the 184 open bracket and freshman
Lucas Maneckshaw (Maurepas, La.) boasted a 3-1 record with all three wins coming by way of falls.

Rounding out the Mariners' All-State placers was sophomore
Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) came in fourth in the 149 open bracket with a 2-2 record with one pin.

The Mariners return to action the weekend of Dec. 6-7 at the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College in Pennsylvania.
