Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 6, 2022) – The USMMA women's basketball team was hampered by a rough start in a 71-65 loss to St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Thursday evening at the Liebertz Gym. The Mariners slide to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in Skyline conference play, while St. Joseph's College improves to 8-3 with a 5-3 mark in league competition.
First-year forward
Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) led the Mariners with a game-high 25 points and 15 rebounds; Jackson was one of three Mariners players with double-double numbers on the evening.
Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) added 15 points and 20 boards with junior
Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) chipping in 11 points and 13 rebounds in the effort.
The Golden Eagles opened the contest on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the contest; Jackson hit a jumper to get the Mariners their first points of the game sixty seconds later. St. Joseph's College extended their lead back up to six after a lay-up and a three-pointer from Lanyah Ford as the visitors held a 14-8 edge after one quarter of play. The lead swelled to a high of twelve points at the midway mark of the second stanza, as an Alyssa Signor lay-up brought the Golden Eagles to a 27-15 advantage. From there, the Mariners outscored the competition by a 15-9 margin as a
Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) lay-up closed out the first half with the USMMA trailing by a 36-30 score.
The Mariners shot just 3-for-19 (16%) from the floor in the first quarter, hitting just 28% (11-40) on their field goals in the opening half. By comparison, the visitors went 7-for-13 (54%) in the second quarter alone.
Despite Reddick converting a lay-up to open the second half and bring the Mariners within a four-point deficit, Ford would open and close the Golden Eagles' scoring account with three-pointers; the latter of Ford's jumpers would give the visitors a 50-42 lead heading into the final frame. The visitors would stretch out the lead to a maximum of 17 points with Julianna Knice hitting a long-range jumper at the four-minute mark, putting the Mariners behind by a 66-49 margin. A spirited fight in the final quarter would see the USMMA go on a 16-5 run, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
Ford led the Golden Eagles with 21 points as Alyssa Adomaites added 20. Brianna Cordell proved to be difficult to contend with in the paint, as she swatted eight blocks in the visitors' win to go along with eight rebounds.
The Mariners' contest scheduled for this Saturday with arch-rival Coast Guard has been postponed. The USMMA women's basketball team will instead welcome Hunter College to Kings Point for a 12 p.m. showdown at Liebertz Gymnasium on Sunday, Jan. 9.
