VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 11, 2020) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team lost its 2020 season-opener, 14-5, on Wednesday to Connecticut College at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

Freshman Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) recorded a hat-trick in her first career game, as she was one of three USMMA goal scorers. Senior Angela Parker (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) also found the back of the net, while freshman Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) dished out an assist.

Schmidt led all players in the game with seven caused turnovers, while also picking up four groundballs. Senior Chelsea Chamberlain (South Setauket, N.Y.) had a game-high five groundballs. Turrentine scooped up four GBs, and both she and Sheedy secured a team-best three draw controls each. In goal, freshman Jessica Gamsjager (Denton, Texas) made four saves over 60 minutes of action.

Turrentine scored the first goal of the game, but it was all Conn. College from there, as the Camels scored the next 11 goals to close out the first half with an 11-1 lead. Turrentine once again opened the scoring in the second half, followed by a free position goal by Parker. After Connecticut College tacked on two more tallies, Turrentine went back-to-back with Schmidt to close out the Merchant Marine scoring.

For the Camels, senior Clara Bisson tallied a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Hannah Lombard added four goals and one helper, while sophomore Kelly Wolin recorded a hat-trick. Wolin and sophomore Catherine Lawrence both led Conn. College with four groundballs each, and Bisson's and freshman Emily Yorns' four draw controls each were game-highs. Senior Erica Hesser had a team-best three caused turnovers and junior goalie Nina Fazio made four saves in over 55 minutes to earn the win.

Up next, the Mariners will travel up the road to face Virginia Wesleyan this Friday, March 13, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Marlins' Birdsong Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page
