KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2026) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team fell to No. 19 Middlebury, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Raymond J. Bartoszek Field. The Mariners dropped to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 1-0-0.

Middlebury opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Colin Dugan's well-placed right-footed boot found the left corner of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. The visitors doubled their lead in the 26th minute as Will Sawin buried a left-footed roller into the back of the net off a nice cross from Dugan to make it 2-0.
The Blue and Gray had their best offensive opportunity of the first half in the 33rd minute when senior Michael Doshan (Mound, Minn.) battled Middlebury goalkeeper Leon Brady on a rush and sent a deflected shot off his right foot just over the crossbar. The Panthers extended their lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute as Nate Dunlop found the back of the net off a feed from Keagan Harder. Middlebury nearly added another tally in the 42nd minute, but senior goalkeeper James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) made a diving save, robbing a blast from Charlie Johnson to keep the score at 3-0 heading into halftime. The Panthers outshot the Mariners 13-4 in the opening half.
Middlebury added to its lead in the 59th minute when Samuel Leroyer headed a cross from Harper Nicholl into the back of the net to make it 4-0. USMMA almost broke through in the 70th minute with its best chance of the match when junior Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) had an opportunity from inside the 18 but fired his attempt wide left. The Panthers kept Merchant Marine off the board the rest of the way to secure the 4-0 victory.
Brady picked up the victory for the Panthers with a clean sheet and one save. Castoro finished with six saves for the Mariners.
The Mariners return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Madison, N.J., to take on FDU-Florham at 1 p.m.
