MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 3, 2026) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team played Drew to a scoreless 0-0 draw on the road Thursday night. The Mariners' record moved to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Rangers' record went to 0-0-1.

The Rangers generated a pair of early opportunities in the opening half, but senior goalkeeper James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) was up to the task. Castoro stopped Turkcan Curak's attempt in the 11th minute before turning aside a shot from David DiNola just 19 seconds later to keep the Rangers off the board.
The Blue and Gray had a chance to break through late in the first half when junior Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) put an attempt on target in the 43rd minute, but Drew goalkeeper Donovan Friedhoff made the save to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Drew applied pressure in the second half, with Castoro making four saves over 16 minutes to keep the game scoreless. He denied Matt Munoz in the 67th and 71st minutes before stopping Andrew Dunne's attempt in the 74th. Munoz tested Castoro again in the 83rd minute, but he made another save to keep the Rangers off the board.
USMMA made a late push to break the scoreless tie as sophomore Ethan Schuette (Gig Harbor, Wash.) put back-to-back attempts on target in the 85th minute, but Friedhoff turned away both shots to end the game in a scoreless 0-0 tie.
Castoro recorded a career-high eight saves and earned the clean sheet for the Mariners. Friedhoff finished with three saves and recorded a shutout for the Rangers.
The Mariners return home on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they host No. 19 Middlebury at Raymond J. Bartoszek Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
