Men’s Lax Suffers Loss Up At Springfield On Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 11, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team was defeated on the road up at Springfield College, 15-7, on Wednesday evening at the Pride's Stagg Field. With the loss, the Mariners' record falls to 3-2, while Springfield improves to 3-3 in victory.
 
Game Link The Mariners had four players record multiple points in the contest. Sophomore Landon Locke (Midlothian, Va.) and senior Kyle Hennelly (Dacula, Ga.) led the offense with three points apiece, with Locke scoring once and dishing out two assists and Hennelly tallying two goals and one helper. Seniors William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) each added two points on a goal and an assist. Freshman Nathan Mangus (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) also found the back of the net, while sophomore Ryan Sullivan (Warwick, N.Y.) chipped in with an assist.
 
Defensively, senior Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high six ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Mangus and sophomore William Schipfer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) each collected three GBs, while sophomore Tucker Kuhn (Towson, Md.) took the majority of the face-offs, winning 10 draws and picking up two GBs. In goal, senior Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) made 10 saves on the evening.
 
USMMA struck first midway through the opening quarter as Locke finished off an assist from Sullivan to open the scoring. Springfield answered to even the game before Mangus restored the Mariners' lead, and DeTommaso later converted off a feed from Barcus in the closing seconds of the period to give Kings Point a 3-2 advantage after one. The Mariners extended the margin early in the second when Hennelly found the back of the net, but the Pride responded with a surge of their own, scoring five straight goals over an eight-minute stretch to take control of the half. Hennelly briefly halted the run with his second tally of the day, this time assisted by Locke, but Springfield added a late score to carry an 8-5 lead into halftime.
 
The Pride continued its momentum early in the third quarter, stretching the lead to five before the Mariners mounted a push of their own. Barcus sparked the response with a goal off an assist from Badeer, and Badeer later scored on a feed from Locke to trim the deficit to three. Springfield answered again late in the quarter to halt the rally and carried a 12-7 lead into the final period. The hosts added three more goals in the fourth quarter to seal the result, as Kings Point continued to generate chances but could not close the gap down the stretch.
 
Springfield finished with advantages in several key statistical categories, outshooting the Mariners 45-37 and holding a 25-20 edge in shots on goal. The Pride also controlled possession in the middle of the field, winning the faceoff battle 16-10 and collecting a 35-25 advantage in ground balls. Despite the loss, USMMA forced 24 Springfield turnovers while committing only 15, and converted 19-of-23 clearing attempts compared to Springfield's 25-of-29 mark. The Mariners also had three extra-man opportunities during the contest but were unable to convert.
 
The Pride was led offensively by Brady Soldo, Jake Degnan, and Ryan Berkel, who each finished with four points on the afternoon. Soldo scored a team-high four goals, Degnan dished out four assists, and Berkel added three goals and one helper. In the midfield, Reece Whitney paced the hosts with five ground balls, while Ryan Berkel recorded a team-best two caused turnovers defensively. At the face-off X, Dominic Savastano controlled possession for Springfield, winning 16-of-25 draws and collecting five ground balls. In goal, Joseph Grenier made 13 saves to earn the victory.
 
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, March 14, when they host Kean University beginning at 12-noon at Tomb Field.
