Merchant Marine dominated the play in the first half, finally breaking through in the 41st minute when junior Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) broke free down the left side and slotted a shot past the keeper for his second goal of the season to give the Blue and Gray a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break. USMMA outshot SUNY Maritime 14-1 in the first half.

The Privateers leveled the match at one apiece in the 49th minute, as Jonathan Toma collected a rebound and scored off an initial attempt by Edward Flores Medina. SUNY Maritime would grab the game-winner with under five minutes remaining when George Kanellopoulos made a 20-yard run down the right side and finished in the 86th minute to make it a 2-1 advantage.

The Mariners nearly tied the match just seconds later in the 85th minute, but sophomore Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) saw his shot from the center of the box stopped by Maritime goalkeeper Augusto Lebron. USMMA outshot SUNY Maritime 26-5 in the match, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, and controlled the corners 14-1.

Lebron picked up the victory for the Privateers, stopping seven shots, while junior goalkeeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) finished with two saves for the Mariners.

Merchant Marine will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. on the road against Manhattanville in Skyline Conference action.
