KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2025) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated Purchase 4-1 in Skyline action on Saturday afternoon at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners' third straight victory improved their record to 5-2-1 (2-0-0 Skyline) while the loss dropped the Panthers to 3-5-0 (0-2-0 Skyline).

Sophomore Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a header off a senior Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) throw-in, giving the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Purchase answered quickly with a goal from Parker Lewis in the 18th minute to even the score at one apiece.
Junior Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) restored the Mariners' lead in the 37th minute, finishing off a beautiful cross from Derwin for his first goal of the season to make it 2-1 going into the halftime break.
The Blue and Gray added some insurance in the second half as junior Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) extended the advantage in the 61st minute, heading home a cross from sophomore Andrew Campbell (Severna Park, Md.) to make it 3-1. Sophomore Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) added the final goal in the 85th minute to seal the 4-1 victory.
Merchant Marine outshot Purchase 27-11, including a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. USMMA also dominated the corners 11-0.
Junior Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) picked up the victory and made four saves in the contest.
The Mariners begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they face Skyline Conference opponent Mt. St. Vincent at 6 p.m.
