WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2025) – The USMMA wrestling team opened the 2025-26 season on Saturday at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College (Pa.). A total of 24 Mariners competed at the event and six placed in the top-six within their respective brackets.
 
Meet Links
Junior 
Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) came in second place in the 197-pound bracket after starting the day 4-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision before falling in the first-place bout to Josh Stahl of York by a 9-0 major decision.
 
Freshman 
Jacob Wilson (Ebensburg, Pa.) placed third at 165, also with a 4-1 record, as the plebe picked up two pins along the way.
 
Three different Mariners came in fourth place in their brackets – freshman 
Viviano Gutierrez (La Habra, Calif.) at 165 (one pin & two major decisions), classmate 
Andrew Huesgen (Shillington, Pa.) at 174 (two majors) and sophomore 
Porter Gresko (Sparks, Nev.) at 184 (one pin and one tech fall).
 
Sophomore 
Maxwell Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) placed sixth at 197 to round out Merchant Marine's placers. He tied for the team-best with five wins throughout the day and had reached his bout limit by the team the fifth-place match came around, officially ending the event with a 5-1 record with once tech fall and one major decision.
 
Also picking up wins on the day were freshman 
Charles Case (Cream Ridge, N.J.) with three at 133 including two pins, sophomore 
Lucas Maneckshaw (Maurepas, La.) with one via a fall at 141, freshman 
Aiden Krass (Gonzales, La.) with a pair at 149 with a pin and a tech fall, sophomore 
Logan Weaver (Suwanee, Ga.) with five at 157 with two pins and a major decision, junior 
Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) with two at 157 with a major, sophomore 
Matthew Gauthier (Forked River, N.J.) with one via pin at 157, freshman 
Reed Kerstetter (Edison, N.J.) at 165, sophomore 
Jacob Brockey (Syosset, N.Y.) with two at 165, junior 
Matthew Ferrucci (Killingworth, Conn.) with three at 174 with one pin, sophomore 
Giacomo Smith (Whitefield, Maine) at 174 with one tech fall, junior 
Caleb Borchers (Vacaville, Calif.) with a pair at 174 with two tech falls, freshman 
Aiden Dugan (Washington Township, N.J.) with one at 184 and sophomore 
Alexander Soto (Fort Myers, Fla.) with two at 197.
 
The Mariners are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 18, when they welcome in Hunter, NYU and Southern Maine for the 2025 Metro Duals. Action is set to get underway at 12-noon at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
