Mariners Roll to Straight-Set Triumph Against Rival SUNY Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team continued its unbeaten start to Skyline Conference play with a commanding 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-15) sweep over rival SUNY Maritime on Tuesday night at Riesenberg Gymnasium. The victory improved the Mariners to 10-6 overall (4-0 Skyline) while the Privateers dropped to 7-7 (0-2 Skyline).

Game Links Freshman Carly Soboloski (Peoria, Ariz.) led the offensive attack, registering her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills and handled 11 digs. Sophomore Maddie Mayer (Centennial, Colo.) added nine kills while classmate Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) contributed seven kills and six service aces, and junior Erin Stillinger (Keller, Texas) had eight kills. Freshman setter Emma Borlie (Baltimore, Md.) dished out a game-high 39 assists in the match.

Defensively, senior Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) anchored the back row with a match-high 22 digs and served up a game-high seven service aces.

Set 1 – USMMA 27, Maritime 25: The Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two early service aces from Schatzman, but the Privateers rallied with a 9-1 run to go up 9-5. USMMA regrouped, using back-to-back aces from Douglas and three straight aces from Schatzman to regain control at 17-13. Maritime fought off three set points late and even pulled ahead 25-24, but a clutch kill from Soboloski tied it, and Schatzman served up an ace followed by a Mayer kill to close it out, 27-25.

Set 2 – USMMA 25, Maritime 22: The second set was tight early before the Mariners grabbed momentum behind kills from Stillinger and Soboloski plus a Mayer ace to lead 14-14. Down 19-17, USMMA strung together a 6-2 run fueled by a Stillinger kill and a Soboloski/Mayer block combo to go up 23-20. Mayer's kill set up set point, and sophomore Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished it off with a kill to secure the 25-22 win.

Set 3 – USMMA 25, Maritime 15: USMMA took control midway through the third with a 7-0 burst highlighted by back-to-back kills from Dyke and Douglas plus four service aces in the run — two each from Douglas and Schatzman — to build a commanding 18-8 lead. Soboloski added two late kills and Stillinger sealed the sweep with a block and a final kill for the 25-15 victory.

USMMA finished with 45 kills, 17 service aces, and four total blocks while holding the Privateers to a .102 hitting percentage.

Merchant Marine returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. in non-conference action against Hunter.
