Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets At Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set Skyline Conference match at Manhattanville on Tuesday night, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22), at Kennedy Gymnasium. With the loss, the Mariners fall to 11-8 overall (5-1 Skyline), while the Valiants improve to 10-7 (4-0 Skyline).

Match Link Freshman Carly Soboloski (Peoria, Ariz.) and sophomore Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) paced the Mariners' offense with seven kills apiece. Soboloski also recorded five digs, two service aces and three blocks, while Douglas added a pair of digs and hit .312. Sophomore Maddie Mayer (Centennial, Colo.) and sophomore Jenny Dyke (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each chipped in two kills and multiple blocks, with Mayer totaling six and Dyke adding two.

Freshman setter Emma Borlie (Baltimore, Md.) tallied seven assists, five digs and a service ace, while senior libero Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) anchored the back row with a team-best 13 digs.

Set 1 – Manhattanville 25, USMMA 19: The Valiants used a mid-set surge to pull away after the Mariners closed within 10-8. Despite kills from Douglas, Mayer and Soboloski, Manhattanville capitalized on a string of aces and attack errors to extend its lead to 20-15. Douglas' late kill and Soboloski's offense trimmed the deficit to 23-19, but the hosts closed it out with consecutive points to take the opener.

Set 2 – Manhattanville 25, USMMA 15: Manhattanville jumped out to a commanding 6-0 start behind strong serving from Alana Rivera, forcing an early USMMA timeout. Soboloski and Mayer combined for back-to-back kills to spark a brief rally, and Schatzman added a kill and an ace to pull the Mariners within 10-4. The Valiants' momentum, however, carried them through the set behind multiple aces from Samantha Andriola, handing them a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3 – Manhattanville 25, USMMA 22: The third frame was tightly contested, featuring eight ties. Douglas and Soboloski teamed up for a 5-0 stretch midway through the set that gave the Mariners an 18-15 advantage. After a Stillinger ace forced a Manhattanville timeout, the hosts rallied behind kills from Loren Hernandez and Caylin Caballero to reclaim the lead at 22-19. Despite late kills from Douglas and Dyke, the Valiants sealed the sweep with a 25-22 victory.

Manhattanville was led by Loren Hernandez with 11 kills and eight digs, while Alana Rivera dished out a match-high 13 assists with five aces. Caylin Caballero added five kills and 12 digs, and Samantha Andriola registered 10 assists and six aces.

The Mariners return to Skyline action on Thursday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 7 p.m. match.
