Win Streak Reaches 12 As Mariners Double Up Sarah Lawrence, 72-36

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2025) – Eleven players made it into the scoring column as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team allowed just two baskets during a 24-6 second quarter and doubled up Sarah Lawrence, 72-36. USMMA improved to 13-1 (10-0 Skyline) after notching its 12th-straight win, while Sarah Lawrence dropped to 4-10 (3-7 Skyline).
 
Game Link Junior Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) went 8-of-14 from the floor and made 3-of-5 3-pointers as part of a game-high 21-point effort to lead USMMA. Freshman Breanna Sommers (Casa Grande, Ariz.) finished with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, while sophomore Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) added 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) also dished out a game-high 10 assists. The Mariners shot 36.4 percent (28-of-77) from the floor and finished +28 (59-31) on the glass, while also posting a 17-0 edge in second chance points.
 
Audrey Mattison and Emrie Pedraza scored 14 points each for Sarah Lawrence. The Gryphons shot just 23.1 percent (12-of-52) from the floor and committed 23 turnovers.
 
Two 3-pointers gave Sarah Lawrence an early 6-5 lead, but a Ramsden 3-pointer at 6:13 put the Mariners on top and they never trailed again. Senior Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) followed with another 3-pointer before USMMA closed the quarter on an 8-2 run and led, 21-11, after 10 minutes.
 
Grasseler opened the second quarter by scoring 10-straight points as USMMA doubled its lead to 20, 31-11, by the 5:07 mark. The scoring run eventually became 16-0 before the Gryphons scored their first of only two buckets in the quarter, a 3-pointer with 2:47 on the clock. Ramsden answered with a 3-pointer and freshman Jayna McIntyre (Scranton, Pa.) made another 3 in the final seconds for a 45-17 lead at the break.
 
Sarah Lawrence opened the third with an 8-1 rally that cut the USMMA lead to 21 points, but the Mariners responded with a 6-0 run that made it 52-25 with 4:49 to go. McIntyre again added a 3 in the final seconds as USMMA took a 59-28 lead into the final quarter.
 
Senior Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) opened the fourth with a 3-pointer before Sommers added a jumper at the 8:54 mark as the Mariners took a 36-point lead, 64-28, its largest of the game. The Gryphons would come no closer than 33 points the rest of the way.
 
The Mariners return home to host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 18, at noon.
