KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team dominated the boards with a +40 rebounding margin and defeated St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 66-39, to earn its 13th-straight win, one shy of matching a program-record. USMMA improved to 14-1 (11-0 Skyline), while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn dropped to 5-10 (4-7 Skyline).

Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) scored a game-high 16 points to pace USMMA. Freshman
Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) had nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while junior
Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) and senior
Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) added eight points apiece. Junior
Cevyn Crutcher (Huntsville, Ala.) also added 11 rebounds. The Mariners shot 34.2 percent (26-of-76) from the floor, but made 0-of-19 attempts from long distance. USMMA pulled down 63 rebounds, including 26 offensive boards that contributed to 17 second chance points.
Mercedes Perez scored a team-high 13 points to lead the Bears. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn shot just 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the floor and made 5-of-26 3-pointers (19.2 percent).
After USMMA scored the first four points of the game, the Bears went on a 10-2 run to take a four-point lead at the 5:58 mark. A Winston layup-and-one put the Mariners back on top and helped key a 13-0 run that gave USMMA a 19-10 advantage with just 2:19 on the clock. Freshman
Breanna Sommers (Casa Grande, Ariz.) made a layup in the closing seconds and the Mariners led, 21-12, after one quarter.
A Barton layup-and-one started things in the second as USMMA opened the quarter with a 7-0 run that made it 28-12 with 6:41 remaining. The Bears answered with six-straight points to close to within 10, but USMMA took a 38-23 lead into the break.
Winston converted a layup-and-one as the Mariners opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 47-23 at the 6:53 mark. After the Bears ended their scoreless stretch with a layup, USMMA put together a 10-2 run that made it a 30-point game, 57-27, with 1:30 to go. The Bears made a late 3 to make it 57-30 after three quarters.
The Bears closed to within 23 points early in the fourth, but USMMA went on a 9-2 run to push its lead back to 30 points, 66-36, with 2:49 to play.
The Mariners travel to Farmingdale State on Wednesday, Jan. 22, for a 6 p.m. game.
