Women’s Basketball Outlasts Mount St. Mary To Win 10th-Straight, 68-65, In Overtime

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2025) – The USMMA women's basketball team defeated visiting Mount St. Mary College, 68-65, in overtime on Friday night in Skyline Conference action at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners' 10th-straight victory improved their record to 11-1 (8-0 Skyline), while the Knights fell to 6-7 (6-2 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Links Three players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, with senior Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) and freshman Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) both tying for the game-high with 19 points apiece and sophomore Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) contributing 18. Barton and Grasseler recorded double-doubles, as the both brought down 14 rebounds each. Winston also dished out five assists, while Barton registered five steals.

The Mariners held the lead for a majority of the opening quarter and the first three minutes of the second, but the Knights kept it close and took the lead three separate times midway through the second. With the score tied 23-23 at 2:30, USMMA finished out the half with eight-straight points.

Merchant Marine went on to lead by as many as 14 points at 4:40 of the third and held a 13-point advantage in the final 90 seconds of the quarter.

With the Mariners holding an eight-point lead, 52-44, at 6:29 of the fourth, the visitors closed out regulation with a 12-4 run, including a jumper by sophomore Sara Cashin in the paint as time expired that tied the score at 56-56 and forced overtime.

Barton scored the first points of overtime on a three-point play and USMMA would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the extra frame. The Mariners' lead reached five at 3:11 and was cut down to just two points twice, but the defense kept getting stops late and the squad finishing 4-of-6 from the charity stripe helped keep the Knights at bay.

For MSMC, Cashin led the squad with 13 points and five assists, while senior Lauren Petrie brought down eight rebounds to go along with eight points.

Up next, the Mariners travel up to the northern Bronx next Tuesday, Jan. 14, to take on Skyline foe Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center Gymnasium.
