Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mariners Fall Short Of WestConn, 2-1, On The Road

DANBURY, Conn. (Sept. 6, 2024) – Despite generating more shot attempts throughout the contest, the USMMA women's soccer team could not overcome a 2-0 first-half deficit, falling to Western Connecticut State 2-1 on the road Friday night. The setback drops the Mariners to 1-1 on the season, while the Wolves improve to 2-1-1 with the win.

Game Link WestConn tallied back-to-back goals in the 23rd and 25th minutes and led 2-0 at halftime. Merchant Marine outshot WCSU, 10-8, in the opening 45 minutes, however the Wolves' freshman keeper Ashlyn Flood made five saves to keep the Mariners off the board and secure the lead.

In the second half, the Mariners continued to out-shoot WestConn, and finally broke through in the 85th minute, when freshman Lauren Enterline (Harrisburg, Pa.) found the back of the net for her first career goal. It was too-little-too-late though, as the Wolves were able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

In net, senior Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) got the start and made six saves over the first 70 minutes of the game. Freshman Eva Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) finished off the final 20 minutes and did not face a shot on goal.

The Mariners open Skyline Conference action next Thursday night, Sept. 12, when they play host to St. Joseph's-Long Island. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. down at Bartoszek Field.
