Schineller’s 84th-Minute Tally Propels Mariners To 1-0 Victory Over St. Joseph’s-L.I. In Skyline Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2024) – The USMMA women's soccer team opened Skyline Conference action with a big 1-0 home victory over visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island on Thursday night thanks to a goal in the 84th minute by senior defender Jasper Schineller (Tempe, Ariz.). The victory improved the Mariners' record to 2-1 (1-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-2 (1-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Links Merchant Marine outshot St. Joe's by a total of 23-8 on the night, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Those SOGs do not include two prime chances in the first half, one by junior Morgan Mitchell (Amory, Miss.) that rang off the right post and another on a free kick by sophomore Faith Sammons (Aubrey, Texas) that was blasted off the cross bar.

Mitchell also had another really close chance in the 51st minute when she found herself free of the defenders with the ball on her foot deep, but her shot went just high of the crossbar.

The Golden Eagles' best chance came in the 77th minute when a cross went right through the box and the net was wide open, but a shot by Alyssa Schmmenti went just wide to the left of the post.

The Mariner defense played strong, shutting down numerous chances throughout that night that were created thanks to St. Joe's speed along the wings. Senior Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) earned the shutout in net, stopping both of the Golden Eagles' shots on goal.

After a weekend off from competitions, USMMA returns to action next Tuesday night, Sept. 17, when they travel up to Westchester County to take on Manhattanville University. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field.
