Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Blanks CCNY, 2-0, To Open 2024 Season

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2024) –

Junior Morgan Mitchell (Amory, Miss.) added a goal and an assist to help lead USMMA (1-0). Freshman Eva Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) made two first-half saves and senior Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) added three saves in the second half to combine on the shutout. The Mariners posted a 25-6 edge in shots, including a 10-5 margin in shots on goal. Laila Issa made eight saves to pace CCNY (0-2).

Game Links USMMA worked quickly to create a shot in just the 2nd minute, but the effort was saved and a follow-up attempt missed wide seconds later. The Mariners had another shot saved in the 9th minute.

CCNY, meanwhile, was held without a shot attempt until the 13th minute when an effort was saved by Fields.

The Mariners then took the lead in the 18th minute. After a long pass into the box from freshman Lillia Miller (Lawrenceburg, Ind.), Mitchell flicked the ball towards goal. With the keeper charging out of net, Santasiero reached the ball first and made it 1-0 with a touch from just five yards out.

USMMA promptly doubled its lead with another goal in the 20th minute. A CCNY turnover just beyond the 18-yard box produced a loose ball at the feet of Mitchell, who blasted a one-timer into the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead.

Following another save by Fields in the 31st minute, the Mariners closed out the half with a flurry of action that produced seven more shots. Two were saved by Issa, however, and a third was saved by the crossbar as the game remained 2-0 at halftime.

Neither team had a shot in the second half until the 57th minute when Miller had an effort saved by Issa. The CCNY keeper added a stop in the 61st minute and made yet another save in the 71st minute to keep the Mariners at bay.

CCNY was held without a second-half shot until the 81st minute when Ripperger was forced to make a save. Ripperger added a save in the 83rd minute and stopped one final attempt in the 89th minute to preserve the clean sheet.

USMMA next travels to Danbury, Conn., on Sept. 6 for a 7 p.m. contest against Western Connecticut.
