KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 6, 2024) – Junior
Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) scored a first-quarter hat trick as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team held off St. Joseph's University of Long Island by a 13-11 score on Saturday at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners improved to 6-2 overall (3-0 Skyline) with the victory, while the Golden Eagles fell to 4-4 (2-1 Skyline) with the loss.

Jablonowski's hat trick was part of a team-best four goals, as she added an assist for a five-point outing in the win. Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) had a goal and four assists while first-year midfielder
Leslie Wysong (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) posted a hat trick with two assists and three caused turnovers. Rookie midfielder
Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) also contributed two goals and an assist to go along with five draw controls and three ground balls. Junior
Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) added two goals on the day and senior
Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) posted a goal and an assist.
The defensive effort for USMMA was led by sophomore defender
Nicole Nagengast (Seaford, N.Y.) who led the team with five ground ball pickups and tied for the team lead with three caused turnovers. Senior defender
Caroline Collins (Sayville, N.Y.) corralled three ground balls for the Mariners and sophomore goalie
Karenna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) made six saves to earn the victory in the cage.
Jamie Trowbridge led St. Joseph's with four goals and two assists for a game-high six points. The senior midfielder also posted team highs with six draw controls and two caused turnovers. Emily O'Mara and Julianna Gentile each scored a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles and Maggie Harding made seven saves in net for the visitors in the loss.
Jablonowski's hat trick was part of a six-goal spurt for USMMA in the opening quarter of play, as the Mariners held the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard through the first fifteen minutes of play. Latchaw, Russo and Wysong all added tallies in the first period, as the Mariners' defense held St. Joseph's to just one total shot in the frame.
The visitors finally got on the board with ninety seconds played in the second quarter thanks to a free-position marker from Emma Lange.
The Mariners would lead 7-3 at the halftime break but the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to two goals to open the second half with goals from Trowbridge and O'Mara. With the momentum swinging towards the visitors, Jablonowski fed Russo for a crucial marker to give USMMA a three-goal edge, before Picozzi and Wysong scored man-up tallies one minute apart later in the frame.
The Mariners led the contest by a 13-7 margin after three quarters, as the defense withstood a hard-charging Golden Eagles team that scored four times over the final fifteen minutes.
