Mariners Coast To 20-4 Home Win Over Rival SUNY Maritime In Annual Sound Shootout

Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team won big over its fierce Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime at home on Saturday, 20-4, in a rematch of the 2023 Skyline title game at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners have now won six-straight and improve to 8-2 overall (5-0 Skyline), while the Privateers fall to 6-3 (3-1 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Game Link For the fourth time in her career, junior Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) singlehandedly outscored an opponent, as she finished the day with six goals. Her six goals and eight total points led all players.
 
Senior attacker Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) scored four times and added an assist for a five-point afternoon while classmate Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) added four points on the strength of a hat trick and an assist. Rookies Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) and Leslie Wysong (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) also contributed to the win with Picozzi collecting a hat trick along with three draw control wins, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Wysong dished out two assists and added four ground ball pickups with three draw control wins and three caused turnovers.
 
Senior Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore Emma Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) each put home a pair of goals to round out the scoring for the Mariners. Senior Nicole Stafanick (Livonia, Mich.) led a strong performance from the defense with three caused turnovers and a ground ball while sophomore Keira Collins (Sayville, N.Y.) added two ground ball pickups in the win for KP and sophomore goalie Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) posted nine saves in cage for the Mariners.
 
Gabrielle Nicolosi had a team-high two goals for the Privateers as Tori Gay led Maritime with three points on a goal and two assists. Jenna Lesiewicz had the other goal for the visitors to go along with seven draw control victories and four caused turnovers. Tori Koenig stopped nine shots in net for Maritime in the loss.
 
Though the first five minutes of the game were quiet, Jablonowski set the tone for the game with back-to-back tallies to open the scoring account as the Mariners ended the first quarter ahead by a 7-1 margin. The junior midfielder had a first-quarter hat trick and added her fourth goal of the game as part of a three-goal run in the second quarter including markers from Russo and Picozzi to put the hosts out to a 10-1 advantage midway through the frame.
 
Maritime answered with three goals of their own to cut the deficit to six, but Latchaw's second goal of the game with just eight seconds to go before halftime gave Merchant Marine an 11-4 edge going into the break. From there, the Mariners' defense pitched a shutout as Barnes, Jablonowski, Jetter, and Latchaw each scored a pair of goals in the second half with Picozzi adding a tally. The 9-0 second-half run was bolstered by a pair of saves from Eagle as well as a pair of caused turnovers from Stafanick in the third quarter of play.
 
Up next, the Mariners hit the road to take on Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary College this Wednesday, April 17. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Field up in Newburgh, N.Y.
