The Academy's 142 were honored in a pregame ceremony, as was assistant coach
LCDR Mark Beaudet, for whom tonight marked his final game at Kings Point. Beaudet was smiling ear-to-ear all game as the Mariners put on a show for their assistant coach in his final night in the dugout.
Â
On the night the veteran coach was honored, it was the freshmen who took center stage on the field. Freshman
Daniel Serna (Claremont Calif.) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to plate fellow freshman
Ben Bridges (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Serna produced the second run of the inning by swiping second and third base to set up a sacrifice fly by junior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.).
Â
Two runs were nearly enough for the Mariners' pitching staff. Junior
Jacob Syversen (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) made his first start in 354 days since April 22, 2023. Syversen tossed a strong two shutout innings on the mound by striking out four while only surrounding two hits and one walk.
Â
Syversen was relieved by tonight's winning pitcher, freshman
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.). Chiappetti earned the first win of his collegiate career by delivering four shutout innings headlined by four strikeouts and no walks. Chiappetti is coming off Skyline Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending April 7. Number 10 hit .389 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs while delivering five scoreless innings against these same Beavers six days ago.
Â
USMMA's offense added on all night thanks to production up and down the lineup. Serna finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the offense with the first four-hit game of his career. A home run short of the cycle, Serna was the spark plug all game.
Â
Clapsaddle joined Serna with a multi-RBI game of his while junior
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) slugged one off the wall for an RBI double to make it 5-0 Mariners in the fifth. A sacrifice fly by sophomore
Charles Cahalan (Overland, Park, Kan.) extended the home team's lead to 6-0 in the seventh. Cahalan's sac fly also gave him an RBI in four of his last six games.
Â
Merchant Marine clicked on all cylinders tonight as they stole eight bases. Reigning Skyline Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) stole three bags, Serna swiped two, while Cahalan, senior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.), and freshman
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.), each had one.
Â
The Mariners put the hammer down in the eighth by doubling their lead from six to 12. USMMA's scored six runs on one hit by using an eagle eye at the plate by drawing five walks in the inning.
Â
After the win, Coach Beaudet reflected on a night he will never forget. "Over the last three years, just having the opportunity to spend time with the midshipmen and with these guys on the field…it's something I'll cherish forever, and I can't have asked for anything better."
Â
Senior
Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.), who has been on the roster since Coach Beaudet's arrival in 2022, had plenty of praise for his assistant coach. "He means a lot to me; I love that man. I've talked to him about a lot of personal stuff, he's helped me a lot. I'm hoping to see him out in the fleet one day."
Â
USMMA will look to take the momentum from tonight's memorable win into a Saturday doubleheader with the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears. Eyeing their tenth and eleventh wins in a row, the Mariners will host the Bears at Bartoszek Field on Saturday, April 13. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 12-noon. Live stats and a live video feed of the doubleheader will be available with links on
the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
