Freshman
David Cherwonuk (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was the star of Game 1 thanks to a seven-inning complete game shutout. In the fourth start of his collegiate career, Cherwonuk put together his best outing. St. Joesph's-Brooklyn only mustered four hits and a walk against the Mariners' left-hander and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position with four strikeouts.
Now 3-1 on the season, Cherwonuk lowered his ERA a full two runs from 6.88 to 4.88 with his masterpiece on the mound this afternoon. The left-hander recorded his first six outs by way of a strikeout and tied his career high in punchouts with nine. Over his last three starts, Cherwonuk is 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA and his struck out 26 batters in his last 16 innings pitched. For the Bears, Dylan Cantwell took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year despite pitching a six-inning complete game. USMMA cracked Cantwell's code in two different innings to support Cherwonuk.
Offensively, the Mariners gave their freshman lefty plenty of run support. Two-out RBI hits from junior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) and junior
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) put USMMA up 2-0 after one inning of play. Clapsaddle added to his team's lead with the fifth with his second RBI single of the game. Freshman
Daniel Serna (Claremont, Calif.) continued his hot hitting by following Clapsaddle an RBI single of his own. Over his last nine games, Serna is hitting .483 with five extra-base hits and four RBIs. Four runs was a king's ransom for Cherwonuk, who calmly completed the seven-inning complete game shutout to lock down the Mariners' tenth win in a row.
Game 2 was a very different story in the early innings. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first and added a run in the second to make it 3-0. Starting for the Mariners in Game 2 was junior
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.). After surrounding runs in the first two innings, Monkevich kept the Bears off the board during the rest of his outing in 4.2 IP. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn added a run in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-0, but the sixth is when the Mariners' offense came to life. Against the Bears' starter Mike Dedella, Merchant Marine was shutout for five innings and registered only one hit. With Dedella at 86 pitches through five innings, he was pulled from the game and the Mariners went to work against the Bears' bullpen. For the second time during this winning streak, USMMA put together a six-run sixth inning. Sophomore
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) got the home team on the board with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Another Mariners underclassman came through two batters later when freshman
Ben Bridges (St. Petersburg, Fla.) lined a three-run triple down the right field line to put the Mariners up 5-4. Bridges also recorded the go-ahead hit in the Mariners' six-run sixth on Sunday against Farmingdale State. Junior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) capped the rally with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-4. After the Bears got a run back to make it 6-5 in the seventh, the Mariners picked up insurance runs in the seventh and the eighth. RBI singles from senior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Clapsaddle gave Kings Point breathing room and an 8-5 lead. For the fifth time this season, sophomore
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) locked down the save and the 8-6 win.
USMMA is now one win away from tying their longest winning streak in program history at 12 set in the 2018 season. Merchant Marine is back in action against the Purchase Panthers at Bartoszek Field for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 14. The first pitch of the first game will take place at noon and live stats and a live video feed of the doubleheader will be available with links on
