Mariners Edge Farmingdale State, 12-11, On The Road On Saturday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 30, 2024) – Sophomore goalie Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) stopped a game-tying effort in the final minute of action and junior Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) reached the 100-career point plateau as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to knock off Farmingdale State by a 12-11 score on Saturday in Farmingdale. The matchup was the Skyline Conference-opener for both teams, with the Mariners improving to 4-2 overall on the year and 1-0 in league play. Farmingdale falls to 3-7 on the year and 0-1 in conference competition.

Game Link Jablonowski tied for the game-high with five points on the afternoon with two goals and three assists to go along with five draw control wins. Senior attacker Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) led all players with four goals in the contest while contributing an assist to tie her for the game-best of five points.

First-year midfielders Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) and Leslie Wysong (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) each netted a hat trick for USMMA in the victory. Wysong added a team-best four ground balls and five draw controls with sophomore defender Nicole Nagengast (Seaford, N.Y.) contributing two ground balls and causing two turnovers in the victory.

Picozzi won seven draw controls to pace USMMA as senior Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) added an assist and a ground ball for the Mariners. Eagle collected three ground balls and made ten saves in cage to collect the win in the stat sheet.

Emily Sohm and Carly Livingston both contributed a hat trick and an assist to pace the Rams in the losing effort with Molly Espey nabbing a hat trick of her own. Espey also registered five ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls for the hosts in the loss while Ashley Codispoti had two goals and an assist. Ronnie Reilly stopped three shots for the Rams in the cage in her half of work, taking the loss for Farmingdale.

Following a game-opening goal from Wysong with just over a minute of lacrosse being played, the Mariners found themselves down by a three-goal deficit after Farmingdale scored four unanswered markers over the next eight minutes of action. USMMA would rally back to get within a goal down to end the first quarter as Jetter's first goal of the game off a feed from Jablonowski capped the scoring in the opening fifteen minutes of play.

Farmingdale held a 7-4 lead midway through the second quarter before Picozzi bookended a four-goal run for USMMA with her final tally on the scoresheet giving the Mariners an 8-7 lead at halftime. Espey knotted the score for the Rams with just over three minutes gone from the third quarter and the score remained tied at 8-all until the final two-and-a-half minutes of the frame.

Jablonowski scored a man-up goal on a free-position attempt, hitting the century marker for career points in giving USMMA the lead for good, with Jetter scoring two more goals in the final ninety seconds of the quarter to put the Mariners ahead by an 11-8 margin.

The Rams stormed back to within a goal following a pair of markers from Livingston, but Jablonowski's free-position strike at the midpoint of the final period of play proved to be the difference in the contest.

Livingston added her third goal of the quarter to bring the hosts back within a goal, but Eagle's stop on an Emily Sohm attempt with just over sixty seconds to play led to a defensive clear from the Mariners as the clock expired. Several of Eagle's saves over the game came from point-blank range including just inside the eight-meter arc to deny the Rams from changing the outcome of the game.

The Mariners return home for the first time since late February with a Skyline Conference contest on Tuesday night, April 2, against Old Westbury in the team's annual 142 Game. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
