Mariners Wrap Up Florida Trip With 8-3 Loss To Haverford

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 16, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team was held to just three hits, all singles, and fell to Haverford, 8-3, to conclude a six-game Florida trip. USMMA returns to the Northeast with a 3-7 record, while Haverford improves to 9-3.

Game Link Senior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 0-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to help pace USMMA. Freshman Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) was 1-for-3 with a walk, while classmate Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) went 1-for-4. Freshman Preston Plank (Flower Mound, Texas) took the loss after allowing three runs, all unearned, in 4.0 innings.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when a pair of USMMA errors helped Haverford grab a 3-0 lead with three unearned runs.

The Mariners answered with a run in the fourth as Reistetter worked a leadoff walk to set the table. After advancing to second on a balk and taking third on a groundout, Reistetter scored on a wild pitch to bring USMMA to within 3-1.

Plank worked a quick 1-2-3 fourth and USMMA manufactured a run in the fifth to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Senior Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) was plunked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An infield single from freshman Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) set up runners on the corners and Reistetter followed with an RBI fielder's choice.

A leadoff walk followed by back-to-back doubles led off the fifth as Haverford took control with a four-run frame that made it 7-2.

The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the seventh before Reistetter made it 7-3 with an RBI groundout.

Another unearned run in the eighth for Haverford created the final 8-3 margin.

The Mariners return to action on March 20 with a 3:30 p.m. road game at FDU-Florham.
