Colpoys Nets Late Equalizer As Women’s Soccer Plays Coast Guard To 2-2 Draw

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Oct. 2, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's soccer team saw its six-game shutout streak snapped, but netted a 75th minute equalizer to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 2-2 draw on the road against rival Coast Guard. USMMA saw its record go to 5-1-3, while Coast Guard moved to 1-5-3.

Game Link Senior Natalie Colpoys (Rochester, N.Y.) had the game-tying tally to help lead the Mariners, while sophomore Alexx Forman (Cincinnati, Ohio) also added a goal. Senior Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) made five saves in goal for USMMA.

While the Mariners had an off-target attempt in the 8th minute, neither team had a shot on goal until the 12th minute when a Coast Guard effort was saved by Ripperger.

The Bears, however, capitalized on their next attempt to take a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a goal from inside the 18-yard box.

After Ripperger made another save in the 21st minute, USMMA tested the Coast Guard keeper as junior Morgan Mitchell (Amory, Miss.) was denied in the 24th minute.

The Mariners then pulled even with a goal in the 27th minute. Following a pass from sophomore Ainsley Carlon (Gilbert, Ariz.), Forman made it 1-1 with a blast from just beyond the 18-yard box.

Mitchell was denied again in the 30th minute before Ripperger made her third save of the half in the 41st minute to send the game to halftime with the score level at 1-1.

On the first shot for either team after the break, Coast Guard took a 2-1 lead on a 25-yard blast in the 57th minute.

A free kick gave the Mariners a chance at the equalizer in the 70th minute, but a long attempt from sophomore Faith Sammons (Aubrey, Texas) was saved.

USMMA then pulled even in the 75th minute as freshman Lucy Thomas (Alexandria, Va.) found Colpoys, who made it 2-2 with a goal from 15-yards out.

Ripperger kept the game tied with a save in the 78th minute and added another stop in the 83rd minute.

The Mariners had the next chance to break the tie, but an effort from Mitchell in the 84th minute was stopped and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Mariners head to Newburgh, N.Y., and continue Skyline action on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a 3 p.m. contest against Mount St. Mary.
