In the dual against the Blue Jays, USMMA went up by an early six-point margin thanks to a forfeit win at 125 pounds recorded by first-year grappler
Calvin Burton (Huntsville, Ala.). The Mariners also received a six-point forfeit at 141, with the win going to junior
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) before freshman
Matthew Trinidad (Mesa, Ariz.) recorded a 9-5 decision win at 149 pounds over JHU's Freddy Pimental to give USMMA a 15-5 overall lead in points. Hopkins would take the next three bouts by manner of decision at 157, technical fall at 165, and major decision at 174 to lead by a 17-15 margin. However, USMMA recorded back-to-back pinfall wins at 184 and 197 pounds to slam the door on their league foes. First, freshman
Tyler Withers (Gettysburg, Pa.) earned a second-period pinfall victory against Samuel Gledhill at 184 to put USMMA ahead by a 21-17 mark. Then, fellow first-year
Grant Mathias (Rockwood, Pa.) recorded an exhilarating pinfall in the third and final period over JHU's Jack Dunn to stamp the overall match win for the Mariners, who lost the 285-pound bout by forfeit.
In the Mariners' match with Muhlenberg, the Mules won the first three bouts via technical fall and back-to-back pins to take a 17-0 lead. Following an 8-7 decision defeat by Trinidad at 149, USMMA got on the board thanks to a 14-7 win at the 157-pound bout from freshman
Jacob Brockey (Syosset, N.Y.). The Mariners' final six points of the match would come at the 197-pound bout as Mathias recorded his second pinfall of the day, just before the five-minute mark of his match with Deon Savage of Muhlenberg.
USMMA will make its second trip to Ursinus College on Feb. 3 as part of the Centennial Conference Duals, hosted in Collegeville, Pa. The Mariners went to the home of the Bears for the 2024 Manganaro Duals back on Jan. 6. Any live links for the duals will be posted on
