NEWBURGH, N.Y. (May 7, 2023) – After a late rally secured a come-from-behind 10-5 victory in game one, USMMA tossed a combined one-hitter and the offense erupted for a 12-0 game two triumph to sweep Mount Saint Mary and conclude the regular season. USMMA improved to 24-14 (12-8 Skyline), while Mount Saint Mary dropped to 13-27 (8-12 Skyline).
USMMA earned the No. 5 seed in the Skyline Championship and will travel to face No. 4 seed Old Westbury on May 10. A game time has not yet been announced.
Game 1
Facing a 4-2 deficit through five innings, USMMA scored three runs in the sixth before erupting for five more in the seventh en route to a 10-5 victory. Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 3-for-4 with a two-run home run to lead USMMA, while freshman
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. Junior
Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) improved to 3-2 on the season after allowing five runs, four earned, and striking out seven in a seven-inning complete game.
USMMA grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first after a one-out walk to sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and a wild pitch set up senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) for an RBI single.
The Knights responded with a three-run second and the score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth when Cahalan scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.
Mount Saint Mary had an answer, however, as a two-out solo home run put the Knights back up by two, 4-2.
The Mariners retook the lead with three two-out runs in the sixth. After a one-out walk to sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.), a two-out double by Cahalan set up runners on second and third. A balk allowed one run to score before Zanetti tied the game with an RBI single. Zanetti later scored on a passed ball as the Mariners took a 5-4 lead.
Register tossed a quick 1-2-3 sixth and his offense went right back to work, blowing the game open with a five-run seventh. Cahalan had an RBI single and Millen added an RBI fielder's choice before Cahalan later came around to score on an error. Reistetter provided the exclamation point on the inning, blasting a two-run home run to right that put USMMA up, 10-4.
The Knights added a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout for the final 10-5 margin.
Game 2
A three-run first proved to be all the offense the Mariners would need as sophomore
Michael Monkevich (Gaithersburg, Md.) allowed just one hit in 6.0 scoreless innings and USMMA rolled to a mercy-shortened 12-0 victory. Chambers went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs for USMMA, while Millen finished 1-for-2 with three RBI. Zanetti and Reistetter each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, and sophomore
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) was 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Monkevich improved to 6-0 with the win, while junior
Tommy Payton (Palm Harbor, Fla.) tossed a hitless frame to finish off the one-hit shutout.
Zanetti set the tone for the game with a leadoff triple in the first. Millen followed with an RBI single before Reistetter added an RBI triple. Chambers followed with a sacrifice fly as USMMA opened up a 3-0 lead after just four batters.
Monkevich tossed a 1-2-3 first before the Mariners made it 4-0 in the second on a Millen sacrifice fly.
The Knights collected their lone hit, a leadoff single, in the second inning. After Monkevich worked a 1-2-3 fourth, the USMMA offense went back to work with a two-run fifth. Chambers walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Leatherwood RBI double. A Heck single set up runners on the corners and Cahalan made it 6-0 with an RBI single.
Following another 1-2-3 frame for Monkevich in the fifth, USMMA made it a 7-0 ballgame in the sixth as freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) added a sacrifice fly.
Monkevich proceeded to work a 1-2-3 sixth before USMMA tacked on five more runs in the seventh. Heck led off the inning with a solo home run before Cahalan singled and Zanetti added an RBI triple. After a Millen sacrifice fly, Reistetter extended the inning with a single and Chambers launched a two-run home run to center for a 12-0 lead.
