Reistetter Tosses 8.0 Scoreless As Mariners Advance Past Old Westbury, 13-0

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 10, 2023) – Junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) tossed 8.0 scoreless innings as part of a combined shutout and the fifth-seeded USMMA baseball team advanced to the double elimination round of the Skyline Championship with a 13-0 triumph against fourth-seeded Old Westbury. USMMA improved to 25-14 with the win, while Old Westbury dropped to 19-18. Reistetter racked up eight strikeouts, while scattering seven hits to improve to 6-3 on the season. Senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored to help pace the offense, while freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs. Sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) and freshman Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) each finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and sophomore Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) went 1-for-5 with a two-run double.

USMMA took control of the game with four two-out runs in the first. After two quick outs, Reistetter extended the inning with a walk and a Chambers single set up runners on the corners. Clapsaddle put the Mariners on the board with an RBI single and Darling followed with an RBI single of his own. Leatherwood then made it a 4-0 ballgame with a two-run double.

The Mariners scored three more runs in the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Chambers set the table with a leadoff double and scored on a Darling RBI single. USMMA then added two more two-out runs as junior Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) had an RBI double and Cahalan followed with an RBI single.

Reistetter, meanwhile, tossed a 1-2-3 first, rolled a 3-6-3 double play to erase a leadoff single in the second and worked another 1-2-3 frame in the third.

Old Westbury led off the sixth with a double, but Reistetter retired the next three batters and then added another 1-2-3 inning in the seventh as the score remained 7-0.

The USMMA offense took advantage of three errors in the eighth, tacking on three more runs for a 10-0 lead. Garner led off with a walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt before taking third on a groundout. After senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) plated Garner with an RBI single, sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) reached on an error as Zanetti scored. Millen then swiped third, but scored on an errant throw from the catcher.

Reistetter found trouble in the eighth, but worked out of the jam. A leadoff single, a balk and a one-out walk gave the Panthers runners on first and second with just one out, but Reistetter induced an inning-ending 5-3 double play.

The Mariners then put up another crooked number with a three-run ninth. Chambers led off with a single, his fourth hit of the game, and promptly scored on a Clapsaddle RBI double. After a one-out Darling single set up runners on the corners, a wild pitch allowed Clapsaddle to score and a Cahalan RBI single put USMMA up by a 13-0 margin.

Old Westbury had its best to chance to score in the bottom of the ninth as the Panthers loaded the bases with no outs against the bullpen, but back-to-back strikeouts and a foul out ended the game and preserved the shutout.

USMMA advances to face top-seeded St. Joseph's-Long Island on the road at 11 a.m. on May 12. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
