CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 8, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team split a road doubleheader against DeSales, earning a 6-5 victory in game one before dropping game two by a 10-3 score. USMMA is now 11-8 on the season, while DeSales sits at 12-14.

Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) homered as part of a three-run first inning as the Mariners jumped out to a 5-1 lead and hung on for a 6-5 victory. Reistetter finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored at the dish, while also improving to 3-1 on the mound despite surrendering five runs in 5.0 innings of work. Senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and one RBI.

The Mariners took advantage of three extra-base hits to take a quick lead with a three-run first. Zanetti doubled to lead off the game before Reistetter launched a two-run home run to right field. After Chambers reset the table with a triple, sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) made it 3-0 with an RBI groundout.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the second as a solo home run made it a 3-1 ballgame.

USMMA responded in the third as two more extra-base hits led to two more runs. Zanetti set the table with a leadoff single before Reistetter helped his own cause with an RBI triple. Chambers promptly followed with an RBI double as the Mariners took a 5-1 lead.

DeSales, however, benefitted from back-to-back bases-loaded walks with two outs in the third to trim the USMMA lead to 5-3.

The Mariners then manufactured what proved to be the decisive run in the fourth. Freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before advancing to third on a flyout. A Zanetti RBI single plated Darling and gave USMMA a 6-3 lead.

DeSales had an answer once again as a two-out, two-run double in the fourth trimmed the USMMA lead to 6-5.

Freshman
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) had two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh for the save.

Game 2
The Mariners broke into the scoring column first with a run in the third, but DeSales followed with seven unanswered runs and rolled to a 10-3 triumph. Zanetti finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace USMMA, while Darling went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Mariners manufactured a run in the third to grab a 1-0 lead. Darling led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Zanetti followed with an RBI single.

After being set down in order in the first and second innings, the Bulldogs broke through with four runs in the third and tacked on three more in the fourth to go up 7-1.

USMMA took advantage of a leadoff walk and a one-out error to cut into the deficit in the fifth. It was Zanetti that came through once again, connecting for a two-run single that made it a 7-3 ballgame.

That would be as close as the Mariners would come as DeSales plated three more runs in the sixth for the final margin.
