ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (April 12, 2023) – Sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) combined to go 6-for-11 with two home runs and seven RBI as the USMMA baseball team used a five-run sixth to defeat Bard, 16-7. USMMA improved to 12-8 with the victory, while Bard dropped to 6-11.
Millen went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, four RBI and three runs scored, while Reistetter finished 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs to lead the way for USMMA. Sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) had a double, two RBI and three runs as part of a 4-for-4 day at the plate.
Â
The Raptors scored a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, but the Mariners promptly responded in the second as Clapsaddle made it a 1-1 ballgame with an RBI single.
Â
After USMMA grabbed the lead in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from Millen and Reistetter, senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice.
Â
The Mariners then broke the game open in the sixth by scoring five runs with two outs. Clapsaddle led off with a double before the next two batters were retired. Freshman
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) kept the inning going with an RBI single and Zanetti worked a walk to set the stage for a Millen two-run double. Reistetter then added the exclamation point to the inning, blasting a two-run homer to give USMMA a 9-1 advantage.
Â
Bard grabbed a run back in the home half of the sixth, but the Mariners tacked on two runs of their own in the seventh as a Cahalan RBI groundout and a Zanetti RBI single gave USMMA an 11-2 lead.
Â
The Raptors pulled closer once again with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mariners answered once again with a two-run eighth. A Clapsaddle sacrifice fly and an RBI single from freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) made it a 13-4 ballgame.
Â
The teams continued to trade runs as Bard strung together five hits as part of a three-run eighth that saw the Mariner lead trimmed to 13-7.
Â
The Mariners weren't done, however, as they tacked on three more runs in the ninth. Millen led off with a solo home run before back-to-back walks and an infield single loaded the bases. Darling added an RBI single and freshman
Quin Fitzgerald (Jupiter, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice fly for the final 16-7 margin.
Â
The USMMA baseball team returns to action on April 15, traveling to Farmingdale State for a Skyline doubleheader starting at noon. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
