Mariners Clinch First-Round Bye In Skyline Tourney With Win In Regular Season-Finale At Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 26, 2023) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 17-3 road win up at Purchase College on Wednesday night. The victory improved the Mariners' record to 12-2 (7-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 2-10 (0-7 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Game Link With the win, the Mariners have guaranteed themselves a top-two seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament and a bye through the First Round into the Semifinals at home. The full bracket will be released by the conference once the regular season ends this Saturday.
 
Senior Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) led all players on the night with six points thanks to a season-best five goal performance with one assist. She also scooped up 12 draw controls and four groundballs, while causing four turnovers.
 
Fellow senior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) contributed four points with a hat-trick and one helper, while three other Mariners recorded three points each – sophomore Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) with three goals, senior Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) with two tallies and one assist and junior Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) with a goal and two helpers.
 
Russo had a monster game defensively as well, as she tied for the game-high with seven groundballs and led all players with five caused turnovers.
 
Two other Mariners chipped in with two points apiece, as sophomore Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) had two goals and senior Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) added a goal and an assist.
 
In goal, freshman Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) made two saves over the 60 minutes to earn the victory.
 
For Purchase, junior Alyssa Kozak scored twice and picked up four groundballs. Freshman Julieth Velasquez tied Russo with a game-high seven groundballs, while senior goalie Casandra Schmoger was peppered throughout the night, but made 22 saves in the losing effort.
 
The Mariners return to action next Thursday, May 4, for the Skyline Semifinals, which will be played at home in the friendly confines of Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium. More information on the upcoming Skyline Tournament will be available on www.SkylineConference.org this weekend.
