Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Mariners Best Bears In Defensive Battle, 5-3

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 4, 2023) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team caused ten turnovers to Coast Guard's four, with the Bears putting 11 unforced mistakes on the turf, as USMMA took advantage for a low-scoring 5-3 victory over their arch-rivals on Saturday.

Game Link Freshman Amber Heverly (Arnold, Md.) was the star of the game, notching 11 saves while seceding only three goals to remain undefeated between the pipes, shutting out the Coast Guard in both the second and third frames. Six of her 11 saves came in the fourth quarter.

Coast guard did fair better than the Mariners in a couple of categories on the stat sheet, getting off eight more shots (27-19) and shots-on-goal (14-13), winning more draw controls (7-3), and logging a better clear percentage of 89.4% (17-of-19), while the homestanding USMMA went 19-for-27 (70.4%).

Senior Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and junior Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) were the only two Mariner players with multiple points (two each), as Coughlin scored a pair of goals to go along with Latchaw providing one tally plus one assist.

Sophomore Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) converted the squad's lone free-position goal and Reagan Jetter (La Jolla, Calif.) netted the fifth goal.

On defense, freshmen Nicole Nagengast (Seaford, N.Y.) and Samantha Atwood (Woods Cross, Utah) caused two turnovers apiece, while the ground balls were mainly snatched up by seniors Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) at a half-dozen each.

The Mariners head way down south to Panama City Beach, Fla. for its annual spring break trip where they will face the Camels of Connecticut College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14.

Any live links for the games down in Florida will be posted on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page before the contests.
