Women’s Lacrosse Opens Skyline Play With 16-10 Road Win At Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 5, 2022) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team won its Skyline Conference-opener on Tuesday evening at Manhattanville College, 16-10. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 5-2 (1-0 Skyline), while the Valiants fall to 1-7 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Link Senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) recorded her third double-digit point effort of the season, as she had her hand in 10 goals on the night – scoring six and dishing out four assists – while also causing three turnovers and scooping up three groundballs. Two other Mariners had five-point nights with three goals and two assists apiece – junior Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.).

Junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) scored once and recorded two assists and classmate Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) found the back of the net twice. Fellow junior Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) rounded out the Mariners' scorers with one goal.

Senior Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) had a team-high six draw controls and four caused turnovers, while also securing three groundballs and classmate Helen Davis (Dagsboro, Del.) had four GBs. In goal, junior Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made eight saves to earn the victory and also scooped up a game-high six groundballs.

After falling behind 3-2 midway through the first quarter, the Mariners found their groove scoring the next four goals to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter. Both teams scored twice in the second and it was 6-5 at halftime.

The third quarter was the difference in the game, as whatever adjustments head coach Kyle Simensky made during the break paid off when Merchant Marine out-scored Manhattanville 7-2 in the frame.

For the Valiants, senior Lara Keenan had four goals and junior Maura Kelly added two goals and one assist, while also causing a game-high five turnovers. Senior Kerry Carr won 11 draw controls and junior goalie Britney Sirota made five saves in the losing effort.

The Mariners return to action this Saturday, April 9, in a rematch of the 2021 Skyline Championship Game at rival Farmingdale State. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at FSC's Rams Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
