Mariners Defeat Farmingdale State, 12-5, On The Road On Saturday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 9, 2022) – On Saturday afternoon, in a rematch of the 2021 Skyline Championship Game, the USMMA women's lacrosse team used a strong start to defeat Farmingdale State College, 12-5, on the road. The win improves the Mariners' record to 6-2 (2-0 Skyline), while the Rams fall to 5-7 (3-1 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Game Link Junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) led the way offensively with seven points on five goals and two assists, while senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) recorded five points (four goals, one assist), and sophomore Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) added four points (three goals, one assist). Three other Mariners had one point each, all on assists – juniors Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.), Phoebe Cho (Fairfax, Va.) and Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
 
Senior Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) caused four turnovers to lead the Mariners, while also tying for the game-high with six groundballs to go along with four draw controls. Classmate Helen Davis (Dagsboro, Del.) chipped in defensively with three CTs and secured four GBs, and Sheedy registered a game-high six draw controls.
 
In goal, junior Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made two saves for the victory.
 
Merchant Marine scored the first five goals of the game over a quarter and two minutes and led 6-1 at halftime. The Rams cut the lead to 7-3 with the first two tallies of the third quarter, but the Mariners responded with four of the next five to put the game out of reach by the midway point of the fourth.
 
For Farmingdale, Anna Zaborowska had four points on a goal and three assists, while four other Rams found the back of the net. Zaborowska also led all players with a six caused turnovers and had a team-best six groundballs and five draw controls.
 
The Mariners will have a week off after their previously-scheduled Old Westbury game this coming Wednesday was canceled. They will return to action on Saturday, April 16, at home against Skyline rival SUNY Maritime in the annual Sound Shootout.
