Mariners Shut Down St. Joe’s In Second Half For 8-7 Comeback Victory

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 30, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team used a staunch defensive effort in the second half for a great 8-7 comeback win at St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday evening. The win in the regular season-finale moves the Mariners' record to 9-6 (6-1 Skyline), securing the #2 seed in next week's Skyline Tournament, while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-6 (4-3 Skyline) in defeat.

Game Link USMMA trailed 6-3 at halftime and scored twice in the third quarter, while the D shut out St. Joe's offense and it was a one-goal game going into the final frame.

Sophomore Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) opened the scoring over five minutes into the fourth to tie the contest up at 6-6. The Golden Eagles struck back three minutes later to take another lead, and the Mariners saved the drama for the final few minutes.

Senior Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) tied it up once again with a tally at 3:16 before sophomore Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) tallied what wound up standing as the game-winner just over a minute later, assisted by Browne. The final few minutes saw both teams trade possessions (and call timeouts), and after St. Joseph's final timeout with just 33 ticks left, the Mariners swallowed up any offensive chance the hosts could possibly have, forcing the ball onto the ground as time ran out.

Browne finished the game with a team-high three points on a goal and two assists. Sophomore Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) both scored twice and freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) also found the back of the net in the win.

Seniors Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.), Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.) and Liam Pickett (Charlotte, N.C.) all picked up assists on three-consecutive goals over the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third.

Sophomore Maverick Geller (Hood River, Ore.) led the way defensively causing three turnovers, while freshman Mark Bredeck (Severna Park, Md.) picked up a team-high five groundballs and had two caused turnovers, both in the second half including one with just over a minute to play in the one-goal game.

Junior goalie Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) made 10 saves over the 60 minutes to claim the victory between the pipes.

St. Joe's held possession most of the game thanks to winning 16-of-19 faceoffs. Sophomore Michael Carere won 11 and picked up a game-high nine groundballs, while freshman Anthony Dibene won 5-of-6 and gobbled up seven GBs. Senior Tim McCann led all players in the game with four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Kyle Linsalata caused a game-best four turnovers. Senior goalie Andrew Brust suffered the loss despite making eight saves on the night.

The Mariners have clinched the #2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament next week and will host the #3-seed Farmingdale State Rams in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 4. More info on the Skyline Tourney, including game times, will be posted on www.USMMASports.com early this coming week.
