Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Mariners Lose Heartbreaker In Double-OT To Farmingdale, 13-12, In Skyline Semis

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 4, 2022) – The #2-seed USMMA men's lacrosse team played its second-straight nail-biter on Wednesday night, forcing overtime with a buzzer-beating tally, but then ultimately falling just short of visiting #3-seed Farmingdale State, 13-12, in double-overtime at Brooks Stadium in the Skyline Championship Semifinals. The defeat ends the Mariners' season with a 9-7 record, while the Rams improve to 12-3 and will move on to the Skyline Championship Game this Saturday at top-seed SUNY Maritime.

Game Files It was freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) who fired the shot just before time expired to tie the game up at 12-12 at the end of regulation, but it came after a huge caused turnover by junior goalie Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the defensive end just past midfield. Stephenson left his cage to charge right towards the advancing Farmingdale player who was looking to run the clock out, and after throwing his body at him he forced the Ram to step out of bounds and give the Mariners the ball left with just nine seconds left.

It was a mad scramble from there, as the ball found its way to freshman Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.), who found a steaking Emerick down the middle who fired the shot past Farmingdale's junior goalie Kevin Loonie to send the game to overtime.

After a first four-minute overtime period that saw the Rams fire the first four shots (one on-goal stopped by Stephenson) followed by three-straight off target by the Mariners, time would expire and Merchant Marine would play its first double-OT game since 2017.

The Rams won the opening faceoff, but a big caused turnover by freshman Mark Bredeck (Severna Park, Md.) gave the Mariners the ball back. Junior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) fired a shot that was blocked by a defender and picked up by FSC with just 2:14 to play. Less than a minute later, Farmingdale senior Terrance Haggerty charged from behind the net and dove in front while letting off a shot the proved to be the game-winner.

Both Emerick and Hall ended the night with hat-tricks, Emerick also dished out an assist to tie senior Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) for the team-high four points. Groom scored twice and had two helpers. Collins and sophomore Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) both recorded three points each, Collins on two tallies and one assist and Winker with a goal and two helpers.

Senior Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.) added a goal and one assist to go along with four groundballs, while seniors Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) and Antony DeJulius (Coventry, Conn.) both had one helper each. Stephenson made 11 saves in the losing effort and also picked up a team-high six groundballs. Bredeck and sophomore Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) led the Mariner defenders with two caused turnovers each.

For the Rams, senior Johnny McMahon led all players in the game with six points on four goals and two assists and Haggerty had a hat-trick as well as one helper. Loonie finished the night with 12 saves.

A big advantage for the visitors came in the faceoff X, as sophomore Antonio Kaminskey won all but two faceoffs on the night, going 27-for-29 with a game-high 14 groundballs. The Rams also won the battle of GBs with 43 to the Mariners' 28.
