NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 23, 2022) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team had a strong second half defensively to eke out a key late-season road Skyline victory up at Mount St. Mary College, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon. With the "W," the Mariners improve to 7-6 (4-1 Skyline) and remain in second place in the conference standings, while the Knights fall to 8-5 (2-3 Skyline) in defeat.

The two teams both had spurts of goals in the first half, but it was all knotted up at 6-6 by halftime.
The Mariners scored the first two tallies of the third before allowing the only goal against in the second half late in the quarter and the teams went into the final 15 minutes separated by just a goal. The USMMA defense put up a zero in the fourth, as Merchant Marine added two more goals to its lead for some breathing space.
Three players produced a game-high four points each, as sophomore
Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) scored three times and had one assist, freshman
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded two and two and senior
Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) found the back of the net once and dished out three helpers.
Junior
Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) also chipped in with two tallies, while seniors
Antony DeJulius (Coventry, Conn.) and
Liam Pickett (Charlotte, N.C.) both scored once each and classmate
Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.) and sophomore
Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) rounded out the KP scorers with one assist apiece.
Defensively, senior
Jason Aiello (Northport, N.Y.) and freshman
Mark Bredeck (Severna Park, Md.) tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers each, and Mirack led all players on the afternoon with 10 groundballs. Freshman faceoff man
Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.) won 11-of-20 draws. In goal, junior
Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) made 10 saves for the victory.
Three players had a team-best three points each for the Knights – seniors Brian Esposito and Colby Martin with a goal and two assists each and sophomore Xavier Rodriguez with two tallies and one helper. Senior Chris Maggio led the way with five groundballs and sophomore won seven faceoffs. Senior goalie Devin Kelley suffered the loss despite making 14 saves.
The Mariners close out the home portion of the regular season this coming Tuesday, April 26, against Skyline opponent Purchase College. First faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
