Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Mariners Go Wire-To-Wire For Big Home Win Over Farmingdale State, 15-12

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 12, 2022) – Coming into Tuesday night's showdown with recent conference-rival Farmingdale State, the USMMA men's lacrosse team had lost its last four games and sat at 3-6 on the season, and were facing a team in FSC that was 8-1 overall and had the #1 scoring defense in the nation (not allowing more than 10 goals in any game thus far) and the #4 scoring margin in Division III. But it was the Mariners who went wire-to-wire, never trailing in an exciting 15-12 home win over the Rams at Brooks Stadium. Merchant Marine improves to 4-6 (1-1 Skyline) with the win, while the Rams fall to 8-2 (2-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Freshmen Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) had the best night of his young career, having a hand in 10 of the Mariners 15 goals, as he found the back of the net five times and dished out five assists. Junior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) added a hat-trick on his birthday, while freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) picked up three assists.

Four other Mariners had multi-point nights, with senior Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.), sophomore Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman Jack Meyer (Sandy, Utah) all scoring twice, and sophomore Dylan Lomelo (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) dishing out two helpers. Senior Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) also picked up a goal on the night.

Freshman Noah Lastner (Pasadena, Md.) had an impressive night in the faceoff-X, winning 14 draws and picking up six groundballs. Sophomore Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) led all defenders with four caused turnovers, while also picking up a game-high eight groundballs. Junior goalie Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up the win between the pipes with nine saves.

The Mariners, who were an impressive 5-for-7 on extra-man opportunities, struck first in the first four minutes and then went on to score the first three goals (and three of the first four before opening quarter came to an end).

USMMA built up a 6-2 lead in the second, but the Rams finished the half with two-straight to make it a two-goal game, 6-4, into the halftime break.

It was back-and-forth to start the third, as Farmingdale opened the scoring to come within one and the two teams traded the first four goals of the half. The Mariners tallied three of the next four to go up 10-7, but the Rams answered with two-straight to make it a one-goal game yet again at 2:19 of the third.

It was all Merchant Marine in the late part of the third and most of the fourth quarter, however, as the Mariners found the back of the net five-straight times to open up its largest lead of the night, six goals, 15-9, with just 2:47 to play. The Rams added three late to make it interesting, but time ran out on FSC's comeback chances.

For Farmingdale State, senior Jake Wandle had a team-best four points on two goals and two assists, while classmates Rob Varello (three goals) and Johnny McMahon (two goals, one assist) both had three points. Junior defender Gino Luchetti caused a team-high three turnovers and sophomore Antonio Kaminskey won 19-of-29 faceoffs and scooped up seven GBs. Junior goalie Kevin Loonie made 11 saves in the losing effort.

Up next, the Mariners will host Manhattanville this Saturday, April 16, on Senior Day as part of a lacrosse doubleheader at Brooks Stadium. Festivities are set to get underway at 2:30 p.m., not too long after the USMMA women's lacrosse game against St. Joseph's-Long Island goes final. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
