Men’s Lacrosse Celebrates Tom Gill Day At Home Rivalry Game Against Coast Guard

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 26, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team celebrated a very special person throughout their home game against arch-rival Coast Guard on Saturday, with programing that honored legendary 31-year head coach Tom Gill. The Mariners lost to the Bears by the final of 17-4, to fall to 3-4 on the season, while USCGA improved to 5-3.

Important Links Tom Gill Day brought back Kings Pointers from the past three decades to pay tribute to their coach and a long-time educator in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at the Academy. It included presentations of gifts for Coach Gill as well as video testimonials sent in from around the country from those close to him. It was a day to remember for the entire USMMA men's lacrosse program.

On the field, junior Carter Hall (Annapolis, Md.) had two of the Mariners' goals, while senior Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore Dylan Lomelo (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) also found the back of the net. Sophomore Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) both dished out one assist each.

Junior goalie Samuel Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.) made a career-high 21 saves in over 55 minutes, while seniors Jason Aiello (Northport, N.Y.) and Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) tied for the team-high with three groundballs.

Coast Guard had two players record a game-high of six points each - Gaige Kruger with four goals and two assists and Caleb Holdridge with three goals and three assists. Four other Bears had multi-goal games. Logan Tobias won 13-of-19 faceoffs and led all players with 11 groundballs, while goalie Dan Lucas made eight saves for the victory.

The Mariners return to action next Saturday, April 2, when they travel up to Cambridge, Mass., to take on MIT. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Engineers' Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
