PURCHASE, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Purchase on the road, 69-40, on Monday night. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 18-4 (14-3 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 2-18 (2-15 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Sophomore Bryanne Buchanan-Cummings (Dacula, Ga.) recorded her third double-double of the season, as she led all players with a career-high 22 points, while also bringing down a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and added two free throws for 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, and freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) scored 11 points and also brought down seven boards. Senior Kimberly Palace (Grasonville, Md.) also added to the USMMA's domination on the glass with seven rebounds herself.
 
The Mariners out-rebounded the Panthers 54-21, and had 19 offensive boards that translated into 18 second-chance points. Merchant Marine also had a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers, as well as a 44-14 advantage in points in the paint.
 
USMMA shot at a 47.6% clip (30-for-63), and held Purchase to just 25.9% shooting (14-for-54) on the night.
 
For the Panthers, sophomore Kasia Morrison scored a team-best 13 points, while senior Miya Ritchie added 11. Classmate Karina Medina secured a team-high six rebounds.
 
The Mariners will face the Skyline's top team, Mount St. Mary, on Wednesday night, Feb. 9, up in Newburgh, N.Y. Tipoff against the Knights is scheduled for 6 p.m. at MSMC's Kaplan Center Gym.
