Women’s Basketball Falls To First-Place Mount St. Mary

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2022) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost to the Skyline Conference's top team, Mount St. Mary, on Wednesday night, 69-49, at the Knights' Kaplan Center Gym. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 18-5 (14-4 Skyline), while MSMC improves to 17-3 (15-1 Skyline) with the win.

Freshman Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) led all players on the night with 22 points, while also bringing down nine rebounds. Junior Madison Demos (Downers Grove, Ill.) added eight points and a game-high 13 boards, while two other Mariners had six points each – seniors Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) and Kimberly Palace (Grasonville, Md.), with Dahlke also dishing out a game-best four assists.

Merchant Marine jumped out to a close, early lead and wound up holding a one-point advantage, 13-12, after the first quarter.

The Knights took over in the second, however, after they started action on a 12-2 run to take a nine-point lead, 24-15, at 6:51. The Mariners got back to within six, 26-20, a little later, but Mount St. Mary finished the quarter with six-straight to take a 32-20 advantage into the halftime break.

The host's lead didn't fall under double-digits the remainder of the night. Despite the Mariners out-rebounding the Knights, 44-41, MSMC was able to take advantage of 25 USMMA turnovers and turn those into 23 points.

Four players scored in double-figures for Mount St. Mary, as sophomore Erin Smith led the way with 16 points. Grad. student Morina Bojka contributed 15 points, senior Annie Keenan had a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds and senior Katie Smith drained 10 points. Senior Lauren Desrats led all players in the game with six steals.

Up next, the Mariners will host Purchase College this Saturday, Feb. 12, in their final home game of the regular season. Before the 12-noon tipoff, the USMMA women's basketball program will pay tribute to its four graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
