Men’s Basketball Drops Last Game Of 2022 To #20 Mary Washington

ASHLAND, Va. (Dec. 20, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team was defeated in a neutral-site matchup against #20 Mary Washington, 68-46, on Tuesday afternoon on the final day of Randolph-Macon's Suyes Holiday Yellow Jacket Classic. The Mariners close out the 2022 portion of their season with a 3-8 overall record, while the Eagles improve to 9-2.
 
Game File For the second-straight game, sophomores Drew Zalescik (Lambertville, N.J.) and DeMarcus Spivey (Ashburn, Va.) led the Mariners in scoring, as Zalescik scored a game-high 15 points and Spivey drained 13. Zalescik also tied for the game-high with five rebounds. Fellow sophomore Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers and classmate Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) dished out four assists.
 
The lead changed hands four times in the early going, and the score stood tied at 11-11 with 14:28 remaining in the first. Mary Washington then scored nine-straight points to build the lead to 20-11. Merchant Marine cut the deficit to 23-17, but the Eagles answered with 11-straight to run their lead to 34-17 with 1:44 left, before taking a 37-20 advantage into the halftime break.
 
The Eagles opened the second half with five-straight points, and then an 8-0 run midway through the half dealt UMW a 60-32 advantage, and the 20th-ranked team in the nation held a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
 
Mary Washington was led senior Da'Shawn Cook 14 points, on 5-12 shooting, with four three pointers. Juniors Andrew Rowson and Zack Blue each had eight points.
 
The Eagles shot 48.1% from the field (26-for-54), making 8-of-27 from 3-point range and 8-of-15 free throws. Merchant Marine shot 37.2% (16-for-43), making 9-of-28 3-point attempts and 5-of-7 free throws. UMW narrowly led in rebounds, 29-27, and forced 20 Mariner turnovers.
 
Merchant Marine returns to action in the New Year, when they travel to Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Gryphons' Campbell Sports Center.
